SEPTEMBER 2014

So how have you been? You look good. Very rested. Is that a tan? It's quite, um—oh, really: a skin condition? Sorry to hear that. Yes, it really does pay to read the instructions on the label. Indeed, who knew that creosote wasn't actually a cheap substitute for fake tan? Absolutely, they should put warnings on these things. Still, never mind: I hear that orange is the new black. Now I just need to go, er, over there and talk to these nice people. No, don't follow me. I'll be right back. Honest. Yes, I'll be able to find you. There's no danger of that. You can simply smile: it'll be like someone just peeled a large Satsuma.

Okay, listen closely. I don't have much time...

The Wolf in Winter THE WOLF IN WINTER, Continued

American/Canadian readers' wait for THE WOLF IN WINTER is almost over, as you should see it in bookstores in late October, with an official publication date of October 28. Early reviews have been very kind: Booklist called it "gripping," and the notoriously demanding Kirkus Reviews said it was a "witty and imaginative journey into the darker natures of men and things that go bump in the night." You can read an excerpt from the book here.

Once again I have produced a CD of music, "Ghosts," as a companion to THE WOLF IN WINTER, and to reward U.S. readers for their patience, the U.S. edition of this CD has two additional tracks not available on the U.K. version. "Ghosts" will only be available at the U.S. tour events, or from stores that host tour events. As the publication date nears, we may be able to offer signed books and CDs through other independent bookstores; if so, we'll announce that in a future newsletter. But to be sure of getting your CD, we'd tactfully advise that you order from one of these nice stores...

The 2014 North American Tour

The American tour for THE WOLF IN WINTER will begin on Tuesday, November 4 in Portland, ME and run until just before Thanksgiving, winding up in New York City on Tuesday, November 25. A week later, I'll be in Mexico for the Guadalajara International Book Fair. Look for more information about Guadalajara on the website as it becomes available.

The tour schedule is always subject to last-minute changes, cancellations and additions, so check the website and/or my Facebook page for the latest information. I'm always happy to sign personal books and backlist titles, but bookstores may set their own signing limits, and it's only good manners to buy a book from the store that hosts the event. If you can't get to an event in person, any of these stores will gladly take your order for a personalized book, and I'll leave a CD to send along with it. Some stores will have CDs after the event, but some may not; if you want one, call ahead to reserve a book, or come to the event in person.

Conquest Now in Paperback

CONQUEST, the first of the Chronicles of the Invaders for teen readers by Jennifer Ridyard and myself, is now available in the United Kingdom and Ireland in a handsome paperback edition. The paperback edition will be available in the U.S. on February 3, 2015.

THE CREEPS, the third book in the Samuel Johnson trilogy, is now out in the U.S. in a mass-market paperback edition.

Finally, a trade paperback edition of BOOKS TO DIE FOR will be available from Hodder & Stoughton in the United Kingdom and Ireland from September 25th, should you be seeking a Christmas gift book for that impossible-to-buy-for mystery fan. The new edition will be considerably less expensive than the voluptuous hardback released in 2012, in case you're counting your pennies.

In Other News

If you missed the special Kate Bush tribute edition of ABC to XTC, my weekly radio show on RTE 2XM, it should still be available for playback for another two weeks through the RTE Radio Player. Click on "Schedules" and scroll back to the August 26 show. You can always see the latest playlist on my website, which includes the RTE Player link as well.

The second of the Chronicles of the Invaders, EMPIRE, will be out in the U.K. and Ireland in January 2015, and in the U.S. in February 2015. More on that in the months ahead, but you can be certain of getting the latest news via the Chronicles Facebook page.

And Finally

Work continues on the next Charlie Parker novel, which should be out in spring 2015 in the U.K. and not too much longer after that in the U.S. I promised that I'd reveal the title in this newsletter, and I am, when it suits me, a man of my word. The next Charlie Parker book will be titled A SONG OF SHADOWS.

In the meantime, you can find me on Twitter at @jconnollybooks, and get updates from the minion-run Facebook page.

I hope to be seeing many of you before too much time passes. Until then, be well—

John
